Women can now get the ‘period delay pill’ on the high street
During summer many women choose to delay their periods because they’ll be wearing swimming costumes, shorts and other non-period friendly clothing.
Until now, norethisterone (the drug that temporarily stops periods) was only available with a GP prescription, meaning women had to organise a visit to their doctor before they could actually get hold of it.
But Superdrug has announced that women aged 18 and over will be able to buy the drug at its stores on a walk-in basis, but they also have the option to make an appointment with their health clinic and get it there.
It’s important to note that you can still get norethisterone from your GP for a cheaper price, but it has arrived on the high street for those who want to pick it up last minute. This decision is all about convenience.
Superdrug will be selling the pill in packs of 20 (£29), 60 (£45) or 90 (£59). These will delay a period for 10, 20 or even 30 days respectively, depending on your preference. You need to take three a day in order to delay the period.

For women who use the combined contraceptive pill, you can delay your period without using norethisterone. By skipping the one-week pill break at the end of a three-week course and starting a new pack straight away, the period should then be delayed to the end of the second pack.

If you’re considering the period delay pill, there’s a chance you’ll experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting so it’s best to be prepared just in case.
It comes with some side effects too such as breast tenderness, nausea and headaches. Everyone’s body is different after all, so make sure you read the enclosed leaflet thoroughly before giving it a go, and consult your GP.
