When the sun shines we often get a bit carried away and forget how important it is to protect our skin. But, s
unless tan brand, St Tropez, has done some research into how us Brits approach sun protection and we've got all the facts and figures for you!
According to the research 1 in 10 of us think the sun isn't as strong as it is in more tropical climates and while 1 in 3 of us love soaking up the rays during our lunchtime, 50% don't apply SPF. A whopping 34% of the men surveyed admitted to not wearing sun lotion in the UK. While we can all agree that a gorgeous golden glow makes us feel healthier and happier, there are a few sunbathing myths that need clearing up before we head outside.
Myth:You can't burn on cloudy days
UV rays can still break through some clouds and can even be stronger than on clearer days, so you should always make sure you're wearing some form of SPF.
Myth: People with darker skin can't burn
Olive and darker skin might have a lower risk of burning, but they are still at full risk of sun damage and most importantly, skin cancer.
Myth:Fake tan protects your skin
Not all fake tans provide SPF protection and simply being darker toned won't improve your skin's ability to protect itself from the sun's rays.
Myth: If you tan but don't burn you don't need to wear sun lotion
Our skin turns brown as a way to protect itself from UV rays and so a tan is actually a sign of sun damage. Whether you have a tan or not, sun protection is absolutely essential.

Myth: You can't get burnt through windows
While glass reduces the effects it doesn't completely block out UV rays, so you can still get burnt!
Myth: You need plenty of sun exposure to avoid vitamin D deficiency
Most people do get enough vitamin D by simply going about their day-to-day business, even with sun protection on. During the warm and sunny months you only need to spend a few minutes out in the sun, while in winter you need around 20 to 30 minutes.
Myth: If your cosmetics contain an SPF you don't need to bother with sunscreen
This is only true if you are outside for short periods of time and the protection is at least SPF 15. If you're spending long periods of time in direct sunlight you should always apply sun lotion under your make-up.
It's worth noting that sun lotion only protects sun 98% from UV rays, so make sure you limit the time you spend in direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest.
