Call The Midwife star Laura Main confirms split from partner Stephen McGlynn

The couple were together for five years

Call The Midwife's Laura Main has revealed that she's split from her partner Stephen McGlynn after five years together.

The actress, who plays Shelagh Turner in the hit BBC drama, confirmed that the pair had gone their separate ways during an interview with the Sunday Post.

'If anyone were to look on the internet they would think I was still in a relationship but let's just say I am now single,' she explained discreetly.

Laura and theatre actor Stephen met when they were both appearing in a small production of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical State Fair, and later moved in to a shared flat in London.

In 2013, she told the Daily Mail that their differing schedules made it hard to spend time together: 'It's got to the point where we are actually watching different DVD box sets; I'm on Top of the Lake and he's engrossed in Dexter – Lord knows what a relationship counsellor would make of that!' she joked at the time.

'But when we have odd days off together, we like to see a matinée at the theatre or cinema.'

The news of the end of the couple's relationship comes as Laura's on-screen life faces a shake up, after it was reported that three of her Call The Midwife co-stars - Emerald Fennell, Bryony Hannah and Kate Lamb - were leaving the show.

Laura's own character, meanwhile, will begin life as a biological mother, as she and her husband conceived a 'miracle' baby at the end of the last season, having previously adopted a daughter.

'I am looking forward to lots of cuddles on set and being reunited with little Angela, my character's adopted daughter and stepson Timothy. Angela is three-and-a-half now and lovely,' Laura told the paper.

And as for whether she'd like children of her own in the future?

'Yes, I would like to have a family – if the right person comes along.'
