Britain's filthiest supermarkets - is YOUR local on the list?
Bad news if you live in Leicester...
Health inspectors have released the names of 14 of Britain's filthiest supermarkets, all of which were given a zero hygiene rating during routine inspections.
One Tesco Express store in Highgate, London, had to be temporarily closed due to a rodent infestation, whilst a Poundland store in Birmingham was also found to have an 'imminent risk' from a problem with mice.
A spokesman for Poundland commented on the incident, which happened in February, stating: 'The company’s primary concern is for the health and wellbeing of its customers and it has reacted swiftly to resolve the situation. The store remains open for business for non-food items.' Inspectors gave Poundland the go-ahead to return food to the shelves three days later once requirements were met.
During inspections, food retailers are given a rating between a zero and a five. Anything below a two means that the establishment is not meeting the expected standards, whilst a zero means that urgent action needs to be taken, and can even result in a shop being closed on the spot until improvements are made.
