Simple, quick and tasty, this easy American-style French toast with maple syrup and bacon recipe is the ideal brunch for the whole family.
When you want a sweet treat for breakfast, French toast is a winner every time. It's soft on the inside giving a cake-like impression (and is there anything that beats cake for breakfast?) and crispy on the outside for a satisfying crunch.
There are different ways of making this sweet weekend breakfast. While some will push the boat and invest in Challah bread, a soft and sweet knotted loaf that is traditional in Jewish cuisine, others will stick to plain old normal sliced bread. If using the Challah bread in your French toast, you will end up with a thicker and richer slice, while normal bread will leave you with a slightly crispier version. While we love both, the Challah bread version can be a bit heavy - though definitely an indulgence!
This classic French toast recipe makes a perfect, sweet breakfast treat every time. The sticky sweet maple syrup works wonders with the soft doughy bread and the salty bite of the bacon. French toast is best made and eaten on the same day for the best, freshest taste - otherwise the bread may go a little soggy. This recipe serves 6 people - ideal for when you've got friends and family over for weekend brunch.
Ingredients

Method
- Grill the bacon until crisp and keep warm. Lightly whisk three eggs, season and put in a shallow dish.
- Dip bread slices in the egg and press gently to help it absorb. Heat the butter in a pan and fry the bread for 2 mins on each side until golden brown.
- Cut each slice of bread into two triangles and top each with two slices of bacon and a good drizzle of maple syrup.
Top Tip for making French toast with maple syrup and bacon
For a veggie alternative, top the toast with lightly-grilled slices of pineapple or fresh blueberries instead.
