Method

  1. First of all, line a deep 8 inch tin with cling film. Make sure the cling film overhangs the sides of the tin as this will make it easy to remove the bars from the tin later on.
  2. It's a good idea to weigh all of the ingredients before you start, so that they are ready for when you need them. Once the marshmallows are melted things will need to be done quickly! So, ask your child to help weigh the mini marshmallows and butter into a large microwaveable mixing bowl. Take another, larger bowl and weigh in the Cheerios and most of the M &Ms. Keep back a handful of the M&Ms for later. No, don't eat them!!
  3. Last of all, weigh the peanut butter into a small bowl or dish.
  4. Now it's time to start to bring all those ingredients together. First of all, place the bowl containing the marshmallows and butter into the microwave and heat on high, in 20 second intervals, stirring in between.
  5. Once the marshmallow mixture has melted, quickly stir in the peanut butter. Place the bowl back into the microwave for a further 15 seconds. This will soften the peanut butter and make it easier to stir into the marshmallow mixture.
  6. Quick as a flash, pour the Cheerios and M & Ms into the sticky peanut butter and marshmallow mixture and stir to combine. This will take a little elbow grease as the mixture will start to set almost immediately.
  7. As soon as the ingredients have combined, tip into your awaiting tin and use your knuckles to press down into the tin. If the mixture isn't too hot, your child can happily carry out this task.
  8. Ask your helper to quickly scatter the remaining M & Ms over the surface of the bars. They may need to press them firmly into place, as the mixture sets so fast.
  9. Leave the bars to set for an hour or so and then use a sharp knife to slice into tall slices.
