Red velvet layer cake
America, we thank you for introducing us to red velvet cake. This moist chocolate sponge is coloured red with food colouring or beetroot and topped with lots and lots of creamy frosting. Also - why have a 2-layered cake when you can have 3?

Burger pancakes
On first glance this looks like a big juicy burger topped with lettuce and cheese. But look closer because it's actually a stack of pancakes with two chocolate chip cookies in the middle - evil genius, and a mash-up of two American classics!

Bacon waffles
We love a big stack of fluffy waffles, and they're a real breakfast institution in the States. To serve the family all at the same time, put the oven on its lowest setting and keep the waffles warm on a baking tray while you prepare the rest. Top with crispy bacon and maple syrup.
Pecan and chocolate tart
Pecan pie is a must on the dessert table (yes, more than one dessert!) at Thanksgiving. When you add chocolate into the mix, things get even more delicious. This pecan and choc tart is made with ready-made pastry, dark chocolate and maple syrup to boot.

Sloppy Joes recipe
The Sloppy Joe is an American speciality. Instead of forming ground beef into burger patties, the meat is fried in a sweet sauce instead and then piled into a burger bun. For the full classic diner experience, serve it with fries and a pickle on the side.
Pulled pork
We're a bit obsessed with pulled pork. You see it everywhere now, but did you know that pulled pork originates from the Southern USA where every state has their own way of serving it. We like it in a bun, with a big portion of wedges and some coleslaw on the side.
Chilli dogs
These chilli dogs are perfect for BBQs or for watching the sport on TV with a cold beer. Some chilli dogs in the US come with chilli con carne on top of the sausage - ours are a little more modest and top the dogs with fried red onion and peppers instead.
American pancakes with berry compote
We couldn't leave out that diner favourite - classic American pancakes. They're fatter and fluffier than British pancakes and traditionally served in a big stack. Try them with berry compote and whipped cream. Yes, cream for breakfast - it's a thing.

Crayfish macaroni cheese
How do you make mac 'n' cheese even more indulgent? Add chunks of sweet, meaty crayfish and spicy pork into the mix and finish with a gratin topping. This recipe comes from the Hairy Bikers' tour of Mississippi.

Peach cobbler
Brits have crumble, Americans have cobbler. Instead of a loose, crumbly topping a cobbler has a thicker, almost scone- or biscuit-like topping which crisps up nicely in the oven. Peach cobbler, packed with the ripe fruits is a summer favourite in the South.
Blueberry pie
Look at the amount of filling in this blueberry pie! American pies are usually deep-dish and filled with lots of yummy stuff, like apple of course or ripe, tangy blueberries. Serve with a big fat dollop of whipped cream.
James Martin cheesecake
New York cheesecake is baked instead of chilled and the result is a deliciously creamy bake with a firm texture. This version which James Martin devised after his travels in the US is topped with fresh berries and loads of maple syrup.

Peanut butter swirl brownies
We love peanut butter, we love brownies so we're totally on board with combining these two American classics into one naughty bake. Serve them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complete the indulgence.

Spiced eggnog pound cake
Forget mulled wine, at Christmas-time in the States it's all about the rich and creamy eggnog made with cream or milk, eggs, sugar, nutmeg and usually some booze! For a bake with a difference why not make this traditional American pound cake laced with eggnog and with a whipping cream glaze - wow!

Meatloaf with gravy
Why have a little bit of meat at dinner when you can dish up a whole loaf? And why put one kind of meat in it when you can have three - sausage, beef and minced pork! God bless America.

Cola float cupcakes
A cola float is pretty naughty stuff as it is - fizzy pop with ice cream floating in it. So what if you turned the idea into a cupcake? We did, they're topped with real ice cream...and they're blimmin' delicious!
