If you’re having friends or family round for dinner or drinks and looking to impress this weekend, cocktails are always a good bet.

But mixing them up yourself can be a bit of a faff, which is why we’re so excited that Lidl is taking all the effort out of the equation.

Their new cocktail range (which will be in store from Thursdays 21st March) was inspired by the 100-year anniversary of Negroni.

Set to be one of the most popular cocktails of 2019, it was invented by Count Camillo Negroni at Caffe Casoni in Florence, Italy, in 1919, when he asked the bartender to swap the soda water in his customary Americano cocktail for gin – a man after our own hearts!

Traditionally enjoyed as a pre-dinner aperitif, Negroni is made up of one part gin, one part vermouth rosso and one part Campari. Why not serve it over ice with a swirl of orange zest for an Insta-friendly touch that will impress and refresh your dinner guests?

An indulgent glass of Espresso Martini makes the perfect after-dinner treat. It’s said to have been created at Freds Club in London in the 1980s and is traditionally made from vodka, espresso coffee, Kahlua (coffee liqueur) and sugar syrup.

For the full cocktail bar experience, serve it shaken, strained, chilled and topped with whole coffee beans.

Each of the cocktails comes in at £9.99 for a 500ml art deco-inspired bottle (which will also look great in your kitchen or dining room – bonus). Each bottle holds five servings, which works out at a mere £1.99 a glass.

Last month, Lidl’s Queen Margot whisky, £13.49, was named Best Scotch Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards, beating bottles that cost more than twice as much. The budget-friendly supermarket was also awarded the title of Own Brand Gin Supermarket of the Year at Gin Magazine’s most recent Icons of Gin awards.

The supermarket also makes two different kinds of gin liqueur: Rhubarb and Ginger, and Pomegranate and Rose.
