'They have lived longer than they knew their mother' Peaches' widow Thomas Cohen opens up about raising their sons

The dad-of-two has opened up in a rare interview

Thomas Cohen, who lost his wife Peaches Geldof in 2014, has opened up about raising his children as a single dad in a rare interview.

The father-of-two has given a heartbreaking account of what it was like to adjust to caring for the couple's two children as a single parent.

Speaking during an interview with German newspaper Bild, the musician talked about the moment he found his wife's body, and how maintaining his routine as a dad helped him cope with his grief.

'What I can remember, it must have been an hour after I've found it, that it's time for the kids' lunch', Thomas said, explaining what happened after he found Peaches' body at their home in Kent.

'They needed their lunch. So I took the children's chairs to the table, took the yogurts out of the fridge, the bananas.'

'The routine I had to keep up with the children helped me a lot.'

'They have lived longer than they knew their mother. They were just one and two years. Now they are four and five.'

Thomas also explained how his children are doing since their mother's death, saying they are 'miraculously' having a happy childhood.

'It was incredible traumatising, after it happened... a few months after. Because it was so deeply traumatising you know that moment.'

'I want them to be happy, I don't care what they end up doing. They are miraculously having happy childhoods which hopefully leads to happy fruitful lives.'

Peaches Geldof died in 2014, as a result of a heroin overdose, while alone at home with the couple's then 11-month-old son Astala.

'When I found her, I was not surprised. I thought to myself at the moment: "Yes of course, you had to do that",' Thomas admitted.

Thomas, who's now reportedly dating actress Zoe Sidel, has rarely talked about his grief publicly, but did speak out about how becoming a single dad at 23 had affected him in an interview with The Sunday Times last year.

Thomas is now said to be dating actress Zoe Sidel

'I had two children who needed to be taken care of and, in maybe early June 2014, I started to do that, and we're now here in 2016.' 'I just made the decision to start looking after myself and I refused to lose myself and become a traumatized, grief-stricken single father who everyone's going to look at and think and feel all of these things about.'

Sir Bob Geldof, Peaches' father, has also previously talked about his daughter's tragic death.

In an interview with the Guardian, he said: 'Part of me kind of half-expected (it with) Peaches, to be honest with you - the way she was carrying on, there's nothing you can do about it...'

'This thing of being forever 25, in my head, that's unbearable, simply because of that cliché - you're not supposed to see your children die.'

'She's very present. Time does not heal, it accommodates. But it is not accommodating this.'
