'Is it a thing?' New mum Serena Williams sparks push present debate

'If so I'm still waiting for mine 10yrs later'

New mum Serena Williams has sparked debate after taking to Instagram to ask her followers for suggestion for a 'push present'.

The tennis ace shared a sweet selfie of her and five-week-old daughter, Alexis Olympia, showing the 36-year-old is holding her daughter up to her chest. Both are wearing the flower crown filter, making the snap even cuter.

Sharing with her 6.8million followers she captioned the black and white image with: 'Ladies is a "push present" a thing? If so what did you get if anything? #conversationstarter'

And start a conversation it did, with over 10k comments, and many fans were in favour of the idea.

One reasoned that it's like a birthday gift: 'I got a cashmere sweater. Not over the top... We are certainly not rich and I don't think it's garish at all...',' while another suggested she ask fellow celeb Rachel Zoe: '... she got the diamonds. In my day...long, long ago there was no such thing. The push present was...wait for it...the baby!'

Another follower posted: 'Yes definitely, I'm hoping for one when I get pregnant'

However, there were also many who argued that the baby is enough of a present for any mother: 'Who needs a push present when you have that adorable little thing? Congratulations! She is so cute!!!!'

'I got a perfectly healthy son,' said another fan, while a third follower posted: 'It's allegedly suppose to be a gift your fathers child/ husband gives you after giving birth😏 however what gift could be worth more than the gift of life😘😘😘😘😘'.

One couldn't help but joke: 'LoL....if so I'm still waiting for mine 10yrs later 😯'.

A push present is usually a gift given to a woman shortly after she has given birth, typically by her spouse or partner. In practice, the present may be given before or after the birth, or even in the delivery room.
