Kate Winslet: Why I banned my children from social media
‘Parents are losing control. You have to be a hands-on parent.'
Kate Winslet has banned her three children from using social media as it makes parents ‘lose control’.
The Titanic star and mother to Mia Honey, 15, Joe, 11 and Bear Blaze, 1, worries that ‘addictive’ sites such as Instagram and Twitter will damage her family.
‘Parents are losing control. You have to be a hands-on parent. It's as simple as that,’ the 40-year-old revealed in an interview with The Sunday Times.
Explaining how social media makes the actress' ‘blood boil’, Kate advised that other parents should confiscate technology from their children.
‘It has a huge impact on young women's self-esteem because all they ever do is to design themselves for people to like them. And what comes along with that? Eating disorders.’
When her daughter Mia asked for an Instagram account she told her that sharing photos is 'like giving away memories'.
Kate, who recently starred in the biopic film Steve Jobs about Apple’s former-CEO, encourages her other children to play more traditional games.

Kate with her current husband Ned
The star, who has been married to her third husband Ned Rocknroll since 2012, said that the pair agreed to charge their devices downstairs as they see other people practically ‘kiss their devices goodnight’.
Her biggest grievances comes with using devices in public; ‘You go to a cafe and grown-ups are at one end of the table and children the other, on devices, not looking up.’
The three-time Golden Globe winner, who was previously married to James Bond director Sam Mendes, concluded; ‘It takes every member of a family to be a family and there are too many interruptions these days – and devices are a huge interruption.’
