ITV to switch off for an hour as part of I Am Team GB campaign
Hint: You'll need to get off the sofa for this one...
ITV will have announced they will stop broadcasting for one hour on Saturday 27th August, as part of the I Am Team GB campaign, which aims to inspire people to take part in more sport.
In a bid to encourage the nation to switch off the TV, get up off the sofa and get out there and do some exercise, ITV will be cancelling its usual 9.30am – 10.30am slot. At this time the TV broadcaster would usually be showing Murder, She Wrote with a Coronation Street omnibus on ITV2 – sorry to any Corrie fans, you'll have to wait for your fix!
Organised by the National Lottery, the I Am Team GB campaign will see thousands of sports clubs across the country open their doors for free, allowing the general public to try new sports and get moving.
Lots of stars are getting involved too, as both the Coronation Street and Emmerdale sets will be taking part in the fun and hosting sporty events.
The Bank Holiday weekend will see the team of Great British athletes return from the 2016 Rio Olympics so this campaign is the perfect way to contribute to the celebrations. So far Team GB have been awarded 50 medals, 22 of which have been gold.
Plenty of Olympians will be taking part, including crowd favourite long jumper and dad-of-one Greg Rutherford, who said of the campaign, 'You don't have to be an Olympian to be part of Team GB'.
A statement from I Am Team GB described the day as 'a homecoming for our lottery-funded Olympic athletes when they return from Rio, inspiring everyone, no matter what their level of fitness, to come together with Olympic heroes and famous faces from ITV in the biggest ever UK-wide sports day'.
