Rower Helen Glover announces that she's expecting twins with husband Steve Backshall

The pair are thrilled to be starting a family together later this year

Helen Glover and Steve Backshall have delighted fans with a very special announcement.

The Olympic rower took to Twitter earlier today to share the happy news that she and her BAFTA-winning wildlife presenter husband are expecting twins.

'Soooo...The biggest adventure of our lives.. 2 little 🐥🐥 of our own arriving this summer!!! @SteveBackshall,' gushed Helen.

The professional sports star accompanied her words with two very sweet pictures.

In the first, the 31-year-old can be seen flaunting her blossoming baby bump at sunset against a very scenic backdrop.

The second sees dad-to-be Steve flashing a winning smile as he gazes lovingly at two tiny fluffy birds.

Thrilled to hear that the couple are preparing to become parents for the first time, followers rushed to send congratulatory messages.

'What wonderful news, it's hard to think of two better role models for children', said one.

Another added: 'Oh what a lovely shot of you there! Lovely news! Best wishes winging their way from Cornwall x.'

Fellow Olympian Matthew Pinsent - who bagged four gold medals during his stellar career - couldn't resist making a cheeky comment about the duo starting a family.

'Be afraid be very afraid,' he quipped. 'Joking aside it's a huge privilege to see them grow up.'

When Steve, 44, replied to say that he is in fact 'very, very afraid' of what lies ahead, Matthew was quick to retort with some words of reassurance.

He responded: 'It's great. Often in retrospect rather than live. But still great.'

Helen and Steve fell for one another after meeting at a Sport Relief event back in 2015. They got engaged the following year during a trip to Namibia.

The couple the knot on 10 September 2016 before family and friends at Piskies Cove near Penzance in West Cornwall.

Congratulations to the lovely couple!
